The weight of fly fishing rods has decreased significantly over the past 50 years.
The use of composite materials (carbon fiber etc.) made it possible to cut fly rods’ weight to a third or even a quarter.
For an equal weight, carbon is 2.5 times more resistant than aluminium and 5 times more resistant than steel. These outstanding mechanical advantages have no yet to be fully exploited in the construction of fly fishing reels.
Despite the widespread use of aircraft-grade aluminium, the weight of fly fishing reels has come down very little.
With the use of carbon fibers, crafted in a rigorous way, MBReels has successfully combined the advantages of a small reel (lightness) and a large arbour spool (fast line retrieval and reduced fishing line memory).
Even if the 2.2 ounces (62 grams) weight of the 2.2 model puts it in the ultra-light category, its unique carbon fibre construction offers an undisputed robustness.
